Double pane windows are renowned for their energy efficiency inside the home. However, their main disadvantage is that they are vulnerable to becoming foggy and cloudy thus restricting visibility. This is an indication that the seal on the window assembly is compromised, thus allowing moisture to creep inside.

This buildup of condensation droplets inside double pane windows is always frustrating to homeowners because it takes a toll on your comfort, your air conditioning system, and your energy expenses. The good news is that you can defog double pane windows by yourself. This article guides you through all the necessary steps.

Step 1

Start by giving your double pane windows a thorough cleaning. The idea is to get rid of any build up on the outside of the panes which might not be condensation droplets.

Step 2

Find a drill at a nearby hardware or home improvement store which supports glass drilling. Then drill two miniature holes on the bottom side of the outer window pane. Put on eye goggles plus a dust mask to prevent small particles from flying into your eyes and lungs. Don't forget ear bugs as well given that there will be a deafening noise when drilling the window pane.

Step 3

Take your time and apply only a little pressure on the drill since you don't want to end up splintering the glass pane. Stop once you've drilled past the outer pane. Remove the drill from the hole.

Step 4

Place a window defogging device over the drilled hole. This portable defog device comprises of a flexible conduit for bringing in low moisture gas, preferably nitrogen, into the insulated space between the double window panes. Furthermore, it also features a regulator to regulate the flow of nitrogen gas across the flexible conduit and into the space between the glass panes. The introduction of nitrogen gas results in the evaporation of any condensation droplets inside the glass panes. Consequently, it is ferried out of the space with the nitrogen gas. You will notice your window panes becoming clearer.

Step 5

Once all the moisture is extracted from the enclosed space, you can deactivate the defogging device and remove it from the window and then fit in vents in those drilled holes.

Instead of replacing your double pane windows because of condensation buildup, you can consider the option of defogging them. It's a more affordable solution saving you up to half the cost of window replacement. Nevertheless, defogging is just a stop-gap solution before you can actually replace your old window sealant and stop moisture from seeping in permanently.
