Factors to Consider When Choosing a Blind Style for a Window

Installing new window blinds can be tricky, with different styles to pick from. Should you opt for roller, Venetian or vertical blinds? To provide guidance, here are some practical factors to consider before making your decision.

Window Size

Firstly, consider the size of the window that you want to cover. Is it a large, expansive wall of windows and glass doors that lead to a patio, or is it a small bathroom window, for example? If it's the former and you want to cover wide and tall windows, you could opt for vertical blinds. These consist of a headrail with a series of vertical slats. They can cover a vast area with a sleek look. On the other hand, if you install roller blinds or Venetian blinds over a series of windows, you may need to use several, and the break between each one will be noticeable. These blinds can therefore give a cluttered look in these kinds of areas.

Vertical blinds also tend to visually push the ceiling higher, so the room will look larger as a whole. The sense of a heightened ceiling adds elegance. You can also walk through vertical blinds at any point, so long as the slats aren't connected at the bottom with a chain.

If you want to protect a small window, though, you might be better off with roller blinds or Venetian blinds. A roller blind won't overwhelm a compact window with too much visual detail, as it only consists of a square fabric piece. The blades of vertical blinds look better when covering a taller window, as they can look stunted when shorter.

Vista, Light Control and Privacy

Different blind styles offer diverse ways to control the vista and light flow. If you view distant hills from a window, you may want to preserve the scenic view and consider which blinds will help.

In this situation, you might opt for dual roller blinds that include a sunscreen mesh shade. This will block UV light while allowing you a screened view of the distance. Your vision won't be interrupted by the horizontal or vertical slats of Venetian or vertical blinds. Of course, you can always open any blind style completely, but then you may have glary sunshine in the room, and the blinds won't be doing any filtering work. If you're more concerned about light flow than saving a stunning view, you could install other types of blinds. Venetian varieties let you angle the louvres to control light and create a pleasing dappled sunshine pattern in a home. You can similarly turn the slats of vertical blinds to let flickers of brightness inside.
